Work Experience (Princess Productions)

21:41

Leading up to the day I began my work experience, I was avidly planning transport, possible accommodation and communicating with Melony, the Executive Producer of Sunday Brunch at The Princess Studios in London.

Day One...
A possible 2 and a half journey and my active organisation proved that the journey from my house to the studio (located on the third floor of Whiteleys Shopping Centre), simply consisted of a 10 minute drive to the station, a 45 minute train journey to Stratford, followed by a 40 minute tube ride and finalised by a quick and simple 5 minute walk straight along the main road (Queensway). Despite the horribly crammed tube ride full of commuters, the journey was simple and went past so quickly that I found myself with an hour to spare, as I had given myself plenty of time for mistakes as I learnt the journey on the first day. I sat in one of the two Pret A Manger cafes on the street and tried to waste the time away so I could be inside the studio and starting the experience! With arrangements to meet Mel at 10:30am, I found myself slowly heading towards the third floor of the centre, and at the door of the Reception of Princess Studios at 10:15am.

Once at Reception, the really friendly receptionist Pia handed me a Welcome Pack complete with copious sheets of information and my login details for my assigned Mac (in which I am typing on currently). I was told I could help myself to any drinks and that Mel would be there in 5 minutes. I was so excited to meet her, she seemed so lovely on the emails we had exchanged in the previous few days, and Jim (the man who arranged the experience) assured me she was "a gem". The Reception itself was looked so welcoming, modern and fun, featuring two goldfish on the desk, large colourful sofas and a highly professional barista-style coffee station. As I completed a form signing away my life (realistically it was simply a form containing my families details in case I fell unconscious), Mel was on her way. Moments later, a really bubbly lady came through the door and introduced herself. She escorted me through to the offices of The Wright Stuff and Sunday Brunch, introducing "The Finance People", as well as the other large group of people involved in the production and behind-the-scenes of the popular British TV shows.

I was then shown to my desk in which I logged into my Mac and started research, as well as my current state of typing this blog post - before we have a meeting at 11:30am. Sitting here typing this, I can honestly say, the atmosphere is so comforting; everyone seems so lovely, some coming over to me and telling me about what the meeting will consist of, and different elements of the show on Sunday. As I look up towards the office of The Wright Stuff, in the corner of my eye, I just noticed a life-size cardboard cut-out of Theresa May. There are televisions around the room showing the live broadcast of the show, as well as a tea/coffee station featuring a tap with boiling water - no kettles needed for a tea. Mind blown.

The 11:30am meeting consisted of an introduction with the team and a fact about ourselves - I told everyone I could lick my elbow because that's the most interesting thing about me, to which they wanted proof. So I licked my elbow in front of 15 of the Princess Production Team. I had only been there for an hour. The rest of the meeting, I wrote notes (almost like minutes) about what is going to be featured in this Sunday's show, as I was so interested by the concept of the brainstorming process and how every person in the team had an individual role.

After the meeting, I was given the task to do research on two of the guests featured on this Sunday's show, hours quickly went by and before I knew it, it was 4:45pm and one of the team, Sam, asked if I wanted to join him and a few others from the team as everyone was finishing early that night. The day went by so quickly that I after asking some questions and listening to the team in a local pub, I found myself on the tube. The most horrible part of the day. The tube at rest hour is the worst, at one point I forgot what fresh air felt like.

Day Two...
Everyone starts at 9:30am during the week, so I got up even earlier to catch the 7:44am train and made it with half an hour to spare, so I sat in a nearby Starbucks, preparing for the day.

Today consisted of the task of writing up questions for an interview with Eden and Nadia ("love coaches" from Celebs Go Dating on E4), in which I found that watching the show (5 episodes of the show to be precise) was helpful in the process of thinking up questions for them. This took up most of the day, with the added bonus of Sunday Brunch cake, as well as the Makeup Team stopping by with some makeup that they didn't need anymore, so "Help yourself" was a key theme of today.

When it came to 5pm, Mel said I could go home to catch my tube/train as rush hour definitely wasn't pleasant. On my way to the Underground, I bumped into one of my favourite YouTube content creators/bloggers, Tanya Burr, which honestly made a really good day an even better one.

Day Three...
Another day of really exciting things! I researched more into some of the other guests - Cel Spellman, who I watched on CBBC when I was younger, as well as downloading various resources from NASA. I went off to lunch and had a wander around the area for a bit, and I then spent a couple of hours watching the Items Researcher and one of the Editors select and edit the clips for Sunday's show. This was so interesting to learn about the process of selecting various clips and then adding a caption to fit, it was insane to watch how fast the Editor was on the keyboard, I need a lesson in keyboard shortcuts because he made it all look so easy. I asked various questions to learn more about the process and then as Executive Producer, Mel came in to make decisions and comment on the content and editing. Again, the day went by so quickly and before I knew it, it was 4:58pm and Mel said I could go to catch the tube.

Day Four (Final Working Day!)
The morning started off with an hour and a half of travel and my usual cup of tea in my Sunday Brunch mug (which I got to keep). I proceeded to research various clips in Waterloo Road for guest Cel Spellman who appeared in Series 6 & 7 in 2010. I also had to find NASA's source of a particular video of Saturn's Hurricane, and if Sunday Brunch was allowed to use images and videos. I also had to email NASA. Pretty cool for a lover of astromy. The day was spent completing more research into the guests and into the legal elements of the content for Sunday's show. Another really nice day which I thoroughly enjoyed!

As I left, I was given a security pass for Sunday and Mel handed me a copy of the script for me to familiarise myself with for the upcoming show. It was amazing to look through a proper script that would actually frame the whole show, and as I looked further on,  I noticed that some of the questions I had come up for the interview with guests Nadia and Eden from Celebs ago Dating on E4 had been featured for Tim and Simon to ask! It's so exciting for me to have made a contribution to the show! I'm really looking forward to watching it all happen live and in front of me now!

Sunday...The Big Day!
I woke up at 6.30am, ready to leave my hotel at 7:30 to get to the studio in plenty of time before rehearsals began for the 9am start. I got set up with a microphone headset in which I could hear the timings for the show (e.g. breaks/time left before the next guest). One of the lovely girls who I had been working with all week, Cara, gave me a little tour to the studio and introduced me to people on set, she also took me with her to talk to Nadia Essex (one of the celebrity guests on the show) in her dressing room whilst she was getting her makeup and hair done. She was honestly so lovely, and looked beautiful.

At first when the show begun, I sat in "The Gallery" - where all the producers and editors was working on the clips and timings, it was a really nice environment where everyone seemed in their element and having fun and laughing at what both the hosts (Tim and Simon) and the guests said. I must admit it was absolutely freezing in that room so I asked if anyone on set needed any help, and I decided to stand on the set to watch everything happen right in front of my eyes. It was so exciting seeing everything come together after the week of work, and I found it so weird seeing the photos I had searched for come up on screen, and the questions I thought of, be asked to some of the guests! Everyone was so nice, and in the break they would come up to me and introduce themselves, saying its a shame that I wasn't staying for longer - and honestly I would have loved to do another week, I absolutely loved the experience, learning about the roles of the team, and what is involved in the process of making Sunday Brunch.

I would just like to thank Melony for the experience at Princess Productions, and Jim for giving me the opportunity.  I had so much fun and absolutely love Sunday Brunch!
